What are SIPs  (structural insulated panels)? SIPs are a component wall, roof and  floor system comprised of foam core insulation, sheathed on both sides to form a  complete exterior framing system of the highest energy efficiency. 

How does the cost of a SIP structure compare to a  stick-built? Depending upon the cost of lumber and labor in your area,  the finished cost of an Enercept SIP structure will be comparable to  stick framing. Material cost is higher, but the framing labor cost should be  considerably lower. Also, the incredible energy savings of the Enercept system  will pay for the difference and continue to save you money for the life of your  home. 

Do Enercept panels contain formaldehyde or CFCs? No, Enercept SIPs were tested by a local  university and no traces of formaldehyde were detected, nor do the panels  produce off gassing of dangerous chemicals. The EPS insulation is as safe as drinking from a  foam cup. 

Do carpenter ants and termites prefer foam core houses? No,  ants & termites will attack conventional and panel homes indiscriminately.  The foam provides no nutritional value. If pestilence is prominent in your area,  contact your local professionals for recommendations on preventative measures.  

Do Enercept homes have moisture problems? Enercept  structures are very air tight compared to other building methods. Generally a  moisture barrier is applied to the exterior in predominately warm climates and  on the interior for cold climates, but always check with your local code  official for the recommended application in your area. Also, an air exchanger or  mechanical ventilation is required. 

What is the fire rating of Enercept SIPs? The flame spread of  EPS (expanded polystyrene) has a  rating of 5 on the UL scale of 0-100 with  asbestos being 0 and red oak being 100. The combustion gases of EPS have been declared non-toxic in  accordance with the Federal Hazardous Substance Labeling Act. 

How do you ventelate an Enercept roof? A ventilated roof is  not necessary in most climates as once thought. Elk Shingle Corporation retains  a lifetime warranty and Certainteed Shingle gives a limited lifetime warranty.  If you must ventilate your roof, 2x's strips can be attached to the roof and  then covered with sheathing to form a vented layer over the panels. 

How do you wire an Enercept structure? A patented  electrical chase is factory placed in the panels. All chases are marked on the  interior sheathing of the panels for easy identification. Enercept also provides  a detailed electrical guide for your electrician. (Patent # 4578909) The roof  panels are pre-wired in the factory per your plan. 

Is the Enercept system code approved and warranteed?  Enercept is approved by HUD, UL and ICBO. Panels have  been tested by RADCO, an independent  third party testing agency, for strength and performance. Enercept offers a  limited lifetime warranty against panel delamination. 

What is the R-value of Enercept panels? There are three  methods of heat transfer-convection, and radiation. R-value is the measure of  resistance to heat loss by conduction only. The most important factor in thermal  efficiency is the continuity of the insulation. The Enercept system results in a  solid envelope of insulation where even the studs have a foam core. Therefore,  the Enercept system has the ability to resist heat transfer by both conduction  and convection (air movement). It is reasonable to assume that a conventional  home would require a R-40 wall and a R-60 roof to compete with a 6" Enercept  wall (R-24) and an 8" Enercept roof (R-32).
